This past weekend, Calcopa Owner Michelle, Director Celina, and Teacher Vanessa attended the ABMP School Forum Summit 2026 in San Diego (April 10–11). The team is currently processing the inspiration and perspective gained during those two days.
Throughout the weekend—amidst speakers, group projects, and shared meals—one of the most significant conversations centered on burnout. This is a challenge every massage therapist either faces or eventually encounters. What stood out were the practical strategies shared for managing and preventing it, going beyond simple acknowledgment.
From redefining sustainable schedules to integrating recovery practices into routines for both therapists and clients, there was a strong emphasis on longevity in this work. Michelle stated, “It felt like a collective permission slip to take care of ourselves just as intentionally as we care for others.”
Another powerful theme involved supporting disabled students in massage education. There were thoughtful discussions around accessibility regarding physical spaces, teaching styles, communication, and expectations. It was encouraging to see schools actively exploring ways to adapt curriculum and create environments where more people can succeed and feel empowered in this field. This inclusivity strengthens the entire profession.
The summit also touched upon the evolving landscape of industry regulation and its implications for schools, practitioners, and students. While these topics can feel complex, the overall tone was one of collaboration. The industry is working toward standards that protect both therapists and clients while allowing room for growth and innovation.
Speaking of innovation, wellness technology is clearly having a moment. From AI-assisted tools to advanced modalities and client tracking systems, there is much emerging that could reshape how students and teachers operate. The key takeaway was that technology should enhance the human element rather than replace it. In this view, technology serves as a support instead of a substitute.
The summit served as a meaningful pulse check on where the massage therapy world has been and where it is headed: grounded, evolving, and increasingly focused on sustainability, inclusivity, and thoughtful growth. The Calcopa staff left feeling validated in their current work and excited about what lies ahead. From the engaging conversations with vendors to the educational insights gained, we look forward to next year!
